The team developed <strong>4 CT-based Math Task Summaries<\/strong>, which are now available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/brock-u-ncdsb-ct-math-tasks\">mathnetwork.ca\/brock-u-ncdsb-ct-math-tasks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2018 Erin Clements (McMaster University) wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/computational-thinking-in-tertiary-mathematics-education\/\">report<\/a> that asks the question: <em>How does computational thinking affect students\u2019 understanding of tertiary mathematics? <\/em>The report explores this by showing how coding was integrated into an applied calculus course.<\/p>\n<p>On November 24, 2018 the Fields MathEd Forum will be focused on Computational Thinking in Mathematics Education. They look forward to continuing their work with the Greater Essex County DSB and are excited about their new partnerships with the Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB and London Catholic DSB.<\/p>\n<p>In the Spring of 2017, an educational needs assessment of early math education in Ontario was conducted using an online survey of 130 ECEs, Kindergarten teachers, and Grade 1 teachers. A summary of the results is now available in the infographic, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/CrT-Early-Years-Infographic-2018-09-05.pdf\">Early Childhood Educators\u2019 and Teachers\u2019 Early Math Education Knowledge, Beliefs, and Pedagogy<\/a><\/em><em>. <\/em>Stay tuned for the full paper, available December 2018 in the <em>Canadian Journal of Education<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><em>Grade 8-9 Transition<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2344 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DJWebsitePic-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DJWebsitePic-300x184.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DJWebsitePic.jpg 646w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>Dr. Daniel Jarvis has been developing an online resource entitled&nbsp;<strong><em>Crossing the Divide: Critical Transitions in Student Mathematical Development (Grade 8 To 9)<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;and which features introductory videos (English\/French), downloadable infographics, and links to other key resources. The new online resource was launched in September 2018 and can now be explored at the following link:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mkncrossingthedivide.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mkncrossingthedivide.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><em>Locally Developed Grade 9 Classrooms<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In June, the team working in locally developed Grade 9 classrooms shared their new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Ann-Kajander-Technical-Report-PUBLIC-DOCUMENT-2018.06.04-FINAL.pdf\">Technical Report<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Technical-Report-1-One-page-Summary-2018-06-14.pdf\">Executive Summary<\/a> on <em>Revisioning the \u201cThree R\u2019s\u201d from the Ground Up: Relationships, Resilience, and Resources. <\/em>This year, the team will continue their work in Locally Developed Grade 9 classrooms in Lakehead Public Schools field-testing new resources.<\/p>\n<p>One example of a field-tested unit involves the mathematics \u2013 and construction \u2013 of birch bark baskets. Cultural leaders from Lakehead Public Schools and Old Fort William were invited to facilitate the initial implementation of this set of lessons, and revised exemplar lessons are being written. Here are some of the students\u2019 \u201cin progress\u201d baskets during the initial field test:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2313\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets-300x80.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets-300x80.png 300w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets-768x205.png 768w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets-1024x274.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets-1200x321.png 1200w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/BirchBarkBaskets.png 1504w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 85vw, 799px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><em>High School to University Transition<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many new units were developed this year and the teacher manuals and student workbooks were tested, and updated, with more updates still to come. There is now a total of 21 modules spanning grade 9 to 12. Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/mast.queensu.ca\/~math9-12\/projects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Math9-12 website<\/a> to access these resources, and try them out in your classroom!<\/p>\n<p>It has been evident that teachers need more guidance on how these resources can be integrated into a coherent well-supported curriculum. With this in mind, development has begun on a Grade 12 calculus and vectors textbook.&nbsp; A teacher workshop for this is being planned for August 2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>MATHEMATICS LEADERSHIP <\/strong><\/span>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/math-leadership\">mathnetwork.ca\/math-leadership<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>During the summer, the <strong>Greater Essex County District School Board<\/strong> had extensive plans for professional development. Workshops targeted topics such as using concrete materials and technology in mathematics instruction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The <strong><em>Making Math Concrete<\/em><\/strong> workshop (July 24<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 25<sup>th<\/sup>), was designed to help Grade 1\u20134 teachers understand how to use the materials in teachers\u2019 mathematics kits, possible innovations, and how to explore concepts concretely and visually.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Grade 1\u20134 teachers also attended a workshop, <strong><em>Math Has Never Been So Much Fun<\/em>!<\/strong> (August 7<sup>th<\/sup> and 8<sup>th<\/sup>), in which they experienced the transformation that occurs when iPads are used in purposeful and authentic ways.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On August 7<sup>th<\/sup>, Grade 3\u201310 teachers explored how to gamify the formative assessment using <strong><em>Knowledgehook<\/em>\u2019s <\/strong>interactive web-based instructional guidance system.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The <strong><em>Progression of Fractions<\/em><\/strong> workshop (August 8<sup>th<\/sup>), helped Grade K\u20138 teachers to make connections from relational thinking to proportional reasoning and represent these number relationships as fractions.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On August 8<sup>th<\/sup> and 9<sup>th<\/sup>, the <em>21<sup>st<\/sup> <strong>Century Mathematician<\/strong><\/em> workshop for all teachers helped them look at ways the learning environment can be structured to support student development of 21<sup>st<\/sup> century competencies, how technology can be leveraged to promote communication and conceptual understanding, and how mathematics that connects outside the classroom can fuel student engagement in mathematics.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Creating Interactive Math Lessons with Desmos, Online Graphing Calculator and Activity Builder<\/em><\/strong>, the August 9<sup>th<\/sup> workshop for Grade 7\u201312 teachers, introduced Desmos\u2014a free online graphing calculator that makes graphing simple and complex functions easy and intuitive.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2317 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/LearningBeyondHorizon-188x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/LearningBeyondHorizon-188x300.png 188w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/LearningBeyondHorizon.png 279w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 85vw, 234px\" \/>In continuation of the many debates, the August 14<sup>th<\/sup> workshop on <strong><em>Memorization vs. Automaticity: Back to Basics or Beyond the Basics?<\/em><\/strong> for Grade K\u201310 teachers, discussed ways to build a conceptual understanding of what multiplication means, how to visualize multiplication and how the standard algorithm for multiplication really works.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On August 14<sup>th<\/sup> and 15<sup>th<\/sup>, the<em> <strong>Make Math Moments Matter<\/strong><\/em> workshop for Grade 4\u201310 teachers, discussed rich tasks that will spark curiosity and meet the needs of all learners regardless of their readiness.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On August 21-23, the Board organized the conference titled, <strong><em>Learning Beyond the Horizon &#8211; Keeping the VISION Alive!<\/em><\/strong> In addition to the <em>STEAM\u2013Makerspace<\/em> session for elementary school educators, the <em>Leading School Mathematics beyond the Horizon<\/em>, brought together Consultants, Administrators, Coaches, and Math Leads. This session was designed to support leaders of school mathematics of varying roles. The presenters from two of our MLLP schools introduced mathematics tasks that are specifically designed to support professional learning with staff and identified the elements of these learning experiences that build educator capacity.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On August 22, Cathy Fosnot facilitated a whole-day session for elementary school educators on <strong><em>Landscapes of Learning: Understanding and Using Them in Powerful Ways<\/em><\/strong>. Dr. Fosnot provided examples of crafted sequences, videos of conferrals, and samples of student work for analysis using a learning trajectory for multiplication.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2320 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/FinancialLiteracy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"157\">All GECDSB teachers were invited to attend the August 29<sup>th<\/sup> workshop on financial literacy. The workshop titled, <strong><em>Sound Investment: Financial Literacy Education in Ontario Schools<\/em><\/strong>, featured the free resources aligned with the Ontario Curriculum produced by the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE).<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On August 29, Junior\/Intermediate and ESL teachers, attended the workshop titled, <strong><em>Engaging our students Through Tools, Tasks, and Talk<\/em><\/strong>. The facilitators provided a closer look at pedagogical systems by exploring mathematics through the use of various open tasks and manipulatives, highlighting the importance of productive dialogue in our classes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The very last GECDSB workshop in the summer series introduced the Primary, Junior, and Intermediate teachers to teaching games for understanding (TGFU) ideas. The August 30<sup>th<\/sup> session was titled, <strong><em>Math Moves: Using TGfU Games to Teach Fundamental Movement Skills; Implementing DPA into Your Day<\/em>.<\/strong> The facilitators explored movement education to make connections to the Mathematics curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2322 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MLLPstructure-300x170.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MLLPstructure-300x170.png 300w, http:\/\/www.mkn-rcm.ca\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MLLPstructure.png 502w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>In August, the ML CoP brought four educators to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvent.com\/events\/toronto-visible-learning-institute\/event-summary-75ea0b2897b04b4eb2932834a2910cf2.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visible Learning Institute<\/a> in Toronto, which featured John Hattie and Jenni Donohoo, with John Almarode facilitating a whole-day session on Visible Learning for Math. This two-day institute in Toronto was introduced as the first step in creating Visible Learning Schools.<\/p>\n<p>In September the ML CoP released a new report on the <strong><em>GECDSB\u2019s Mathematics Leadership Learning Project (MLLP)<\/em><\/strong>. This project supported Math Leadership Learning Teams in 6 schools to lead mathematics learning through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
